Influences of Settlement: What I Learned

When I learned about the factors that influence settlement, I learned many interesting points about why people settle where they do. However, there was one fact that striked me as the most interesting about how climate, physical features, and natural resources impact settlement. I learned the term ´population center´ t
he middle of a region´s population in a certain place in that region. If I were never in this class, I would have had no idea what this meant. Also, there is a part of my sketchnote of which I am most proud. I´m proud of my drawing that depicts what aspects of climate people do not like. I like this part the most because it has the most color and the symbols of each climate are unique. I sure have learned a lot in these past classes about settlement!

Globalization: What is it, and How Does it Affect Us?

My sketch-note of globalization and trade

While in social studies class, I have learned facts about globalization and trade that will help me with understanding the world around me. However, there was one point that struck me as the most interesting fact of all. When I learned the positive and negative impacts of globalization, I noticed that even though a developing country might increase in jobs because the production might be cheaper, there are negative effects of this. When a corporation moves to that developing country, many workers are laid off in developed countries, and those people are then jobless.

Also, I am most proud of one drawing particularly on my sketch-note. I drew the negative effects of globalization, and worker right violations was depicted. I drew a large pair of hands ripping the frail, underpaid worker's rights of work. This symbolizes how powerful people in a often company abuse helpless workers.

What I Learned about Standard of Living

A country’s standard of living is not an accurate representation of a how everyone in that country lives. This is because many of the economic indicators and their data are mainly averages. This said, they will only show what the country would be like if everyone were equal. However, this is not true, and there could be many poor people with low health and many extremely rich people with great health. With an average, it just shows the country as a whole and can not always determine individuals.

The most interesting thing that I learned about standard of living is that though it may not accurately portray the people individually in a country, it still can give a very accurate representation of the country as a whole. For example, even if some people in the United States are poor and unhealthy, the majority of the country’s population is wealthier and healthy, and standard of living is to show just that. Without analyzing standard of living, the general state of a country would be hard to find because there is usually a big and diverse state of individuals.

I think that people in a country with a higher standard of living do have a big obligation to help people with low standard of livings. I think this because many countries with lower standard of living have resources that wealthier and healthier countries need. If a lower standard of living country has something, a wise thing to do is to keep them healthy. Also, compassion is important. If a country has a bad health and is poor, they are probably living very poorly, and might need help. Compassion is key.
